If you are considering Solar, you may be heard that solar can cause roofing problems and unfortunately, this is true, because there are installers for solar panels that don’t follow best practices.

Let’s go over some of the main problems that you can have when a solar installer doesn’t do a good job, following procedures and best practices.

  • The first problem is from a license perspective: this means that if the solar installer doesn’t have license it can translate into a potential risk of hiring a person that doesn’t have the training or knowledge associated with a license contractor
  • The second problem is from a time frame perspective: is this solar installer did not expedite the process then you can be waiting for months to get your system installed so for instance, if your roof it’s been already penetrated and not seal properly then can cause a sealing or leaking problems on the roof
  • Third problem is from a roofing industry perspective: some roofing company’s already have solar panels installation services included in their portfolio of services, and some others don’t. Is the roofing company that installed your roof doesn’t have the solar service and they don’t care about the customer. They will try to blame the solar installation procedure as the Origin of a poor roofing performance installation and the origin of the mold and leaking issues in your roof or attic

Just like when you’re choosing a roofing contractor, there is good players, bad players, and average players. When you are in the construction business, this is a reality that cannot be hide.

So, what can we do if making decisions regarding your solar panel installation company represents a potential risk of causing roof problems? well the answer is simple, and this applies to all your decisions regarding selecting a contractor for a home improvement job, or an contractor related with construction: do your due diligence.

Some of the basic steps include:

  1. Make sure you’re receiving a written proposal
  2. Get at least three estimates so that you can have a real sense of what the market is offering
  3. Check the contractor’s license
  4. Look at the reviews on Google, yelp, HomeAdvisor or Better Business Bureau
  5. Give yourself some time to sleep over your decision, and don’t react easily to sales pressure techniques from the contractor
  6. Ask your friends and family about recommendations. If they already have a good experience with a roofing contractor, then this could be a good sign

The reality is that a solar panel installation process is going to include roof penetration to attach your solar system, in most of the cases. There are techniques to install your system without roofing penetration, but these techniques are potentially related with shingle cracking, so make sure to ask for the product specifics and warranties. Either way if when the solar installer doesn’t do a good job it can create roof problems.

If you want to have a solar panel installation estimate that includes a roofing penetration warranty and leaking protection reach out to Clever Energy and get an estimate that includes coverage for 30 years against these issues.
